Art classes for Teenagers

We offer a semester long course for teens, ages 13-18, which aims to lay a strong foundation in theelements of art required to create a portfolio for college application. Weekly classes will cover a wide variety of media and subject matter, building skills, understanding andsensitivity to design and technique as well as giving students a perspective on the history of art.

Classes introduce sequential skills which build naturally in a successful progression towards a personalstyle while strengthening skills. Weekly projects in the classroom include:

• Proportions of the human face and form
• Shading with lights and darks to create volume and mass
• Positive and negative design to enrich composition
• Perspective drawing from life and from images, to enhance depth and layering in drawing andpainting
• Many engaging projects based on animals, birds and insect life.

Drawing skills form a basis from which our students gain confidence: from slow, contour drawing throughquick gestural studies as well as non-traditional contemporary cartoon styles, students learn how totranslate the edges of objects and images into meaningful and sophisticated art.

Media explored include the following:

• Ink including pen and ink and contemporary marker rendering
• Acrylic paints including new mediums, glazes and additives
• Watercolors and gouachePencils, colored pencils, conte crayons and charcoals
• Oil pastels and chalk 
• Collage and manipulated images including image transfers

At the end of the course you should have produced a beautiful portfolio of art work to be proud of.

Please note that we encourage students to attend classes sequentially. Classes missed cannot berefunded or rescheduled and will be considered forfeit.

Total fee : $360, payable in 4 installments by credit card or PayPal online.

Students will receive a list of art supplies which can be purchased at Jerry’s Artarama in-store or onlineand will remain the property of the student. We estimate supplies to cost $60. We will supply many ofthe basic items in the studio.
